How to Book Your Best Flight Deal

You may have already gotten the not-so-great, vague advice to look online for the best deals on air travel.

Online is the right place to find the bargains.

Here is our simple, not vague, 3-step process to get you where you are going.

Simple 3-Step Process for Booking Cheap Flights from Texas

  1. Gather pertinent information
  2. Research available options
  3. Book your best flight

1. Gather Pertinent Information

As in so many other things, it’s important to establish the Who? What? When? Where? and How? of your adventure.

Looking for a just-the-right-sized notebook for gathering your flight information, shop here!

Who is going?

Will you be traveling solo, as half of a couple or as part a group? Or perhaps you are booking tickets for someone else. Knowing who all will make up the travel party allows you to shop efficiently for yourself or your group.

What is the reason for your trip?

Are you traveling for a special occasion, like a wedding, graduation or job interview? Or is this a long dreamed of vacation or improv getaway? The answer to this question informs the remaining three questions.

When do you plan to travel?

How much flexibility is in your schedule? Is there a fixed date you need to hit (like a wedding, graduation or job interview), a season of the year you want to travel (leaf peeping in the Northeast, for example, or enormous wave season in Portugal) or is your When? wide open?

Where is your departure city and where is your destination?

This is a 2-part Where? question: where are you leaving from and where are you going?

To narrow down your best departure airport, check out this post, because the airport closest to your house might not be your cheapest.

Is your destination a specific location, like New York City, or is it a region, say the Pacific Northwest or Italy?

How long do you plan to stay?

Is it a day trip or will you be gone for month? You’ll need an idea of how many days will pass between your flights there and back.

That wasn’t so terrible, was it? Next, let’s look at using these answers to research your best deal on flights.

2. Research Available Flights

Equipped with the information you gleaned above, your Who? What? When? Where? and How?, you have the details you need to research available flights.

I prefer to use Google Flights for shopping.

Use ‘Incognito’ mode on your browser when shopping for flights.

Airlines auto-increase prices if they have seen you search for flights. Who could have guessed cookies would become such an unwelcome thing?

If you have never used incognito mode before, also called a private window, it is a browser feature that hide your tracks, somewhat. Using privacy browsing will not make your search invisible; it should, however, cut back on the pings and cookies you generate. Here is an article on how to go incognito across different browsers.

Google Flights is my go-to flight finding website because it gives you the best overview of which airlines fly the routes you need. Additionally, it gives you across the board best prices.

Google, being Google, is not beholden to contracted agreements like most booking websites.

When you open the website, you will be given the opportunity to choose Round Trip, One Way or Multi-City; number of passengers; class of travel Economy, Premium Economy, Business or First;

3. Book Your Best Cheap Flight from Texas

Prices for flights will vary greatly depending on the time of year you travel, what days of the week you travel, what airline you choose, the level of service you expect and when you book your flight.

Three Tips for Saving Money on Flights

Book your tickets during Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday sales – if at all possible, take advantage of the big discounts travel sites offer during the dizzying holiday crush. I got a crazy deal on my daughter’s flight to New Zealand during a Black Friday sale.

Best time to book your flight – cheapest airfares are available on travel websites between midnight Tuesday & 11:00pm Wednesday. It’s worth setting a timer on your phone to remind you to shop during this time window. The potential savings are real!

Worst time to buy your ticket – posted prices are the most expensive midnight Thursday to noon on Saturday. Prices are highest when the most people are shopping. For example, the weekends. If you are looking during these peak hours, use incognito mode and come back to buy on a Wednesday.

To Recap

To book cheap flights from Texas, after gathering your pertinent information (who, what, when, where and how), narrow down the least expensive dates to travel and discover which airlines offer the best schedules then buy your ticket when prices are lowest.

Bon voyage, y’all!
